Competency-Based Education: A Focus on Technology
Wednesday December 4, 2024 9:30am - 9:50am PST
Through grant funding provided via the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, eight system colleges are creating new direct assessment competency-based education (CBE) programs that will offer certificates and full AA degrees. This form of learning offers many benefits for both students and colleges, helping us all adapt to a changing economy and higher ed environment. But, creating a new CBE program is not a simple endeavor, especially “direct assessment” CBE at a public college. During this presentation, we will describe the potential benefits of CBE, how to address specific challenges in developing such a program, and how certain technologies can facilitate the process. Documents will be shared as resources to guide colleges in creating their own CBE programs. At the end of this session, participants will be able to: 1) Define what CBE is and describe how it can benefit students (and colleges)
2) Summarize the characteristics of the programs being developed in the CCC System
3) Explain how certain technologies can help a college develop and deliver CBE

From WTF?! to WCAG: Captions in Higher Education
Wednesday December 4, 2024 11:20am - 11:30am PST
In late 2020, UC San Diego's service desk received a ticket from a concerned professor indicating that a machine captioning system had incorrectly transcribed multiple instances of profanity or offensive words from a Zoom-based lecture. What began as a technical investigation quickly turned into a broader discussion of censorship, academic freedom, and the ultimate impracticality of educational institutions being able to meet basic accessibility standards for multimedia. In this talk we'll discuss this and other similar incidents at UC San Diego, offer ideas for how schools can realistically approach meeting WCAG AA accessibility standards, and invite participants to provide solutions of their own.

By the end of this session, you should be able to:
  1. Identify challenges higher institutions encounter with meeting multimedia accessibility standards
  2. Summarize how Zoom and Kaltura's profanity filters work
  3. Explain how profanity filtering and academic freedom are at odds

A Model for Instructional Designers Collaborating with Faculty: The Collaborative Mapping Model
Wednesday December 4, 2024 11:30am - 11:40am PST
Resistance and conflict are not strangers to the faculty member-instructional designer relationship, particularly when roles are not clearly delineated. In his 2021 article, “The Collaborative Mapping Model: Relationship-Centered Instructional Design for Higher Education,” Jason Drysdale proposes a process to support faculty with their course design and development process and defines the role of the instructional designer as a collaborator, where the emphasis is on the relationship more than the product.

The instructional designers at California State University implemented this model with 40 faculty by offering a stipend to re-design face-to-face courses to online formats, including hybrid and fully asynchronous courses. The re-design process is currently taking place. An evaluation survey will be administered to faculty and instructional designers, and the results will be shared at this conference.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
  1. Describe the Collaborative Mapping Model (CMM) process
  2. Compare and contrast the experience of CSUF instructional designers with their own campus and imagine what the CMM process could look like for their institution.
  3. Adopt and adapt the CMM forms developed at CSUF to meet their own needs.

Merging Academic Support Departments: Process, Reasons, and Best Practices
Wednesday December 4, 2024 11:40am - 11:50am PST
With a focus on support and adapting to the evolving educational landscape, organization structural changes may need to occur. The change process from idea to implementation should be done thoughtfully and precisely to accurately take into account the intended goals and the required steps to meet those goals. At one large university, two departments that supported the campus community with pedagogy and technology related topics began the process of merging into one. The development of a new cohesive unit required a focus on the intended outcomes of the change and the impact it could have on those both internal and external to the departments. In addition, it  needed to highlight and reflect the expertise of the staff members. This session will briefly discuss the process of merging academic support units, reasons that mergers might occur, and best practices to implement the changes that positively impact the evolving needs of the campus community.

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
  1. Participants will discover which change processes can lead to a successful merger of academic departments.
  2. Participants will examine how a transparent approach to organizational change can generate a stronger, cohesive, and cooperative department.
  3. Participants will identify how the naming of a department has an impact on the broader community.

Cloudy with a Chance of Snowballs: Scaling Humanized Online Teaching
Wednesday December 4, 2024 3:30pm - 4:00pm PST
Using weather conditions as a metaphor, we will address the question, “What constitutes successful scaling of equitable teaching practices?” Is it the number of faculty who complete a professional development program, or the tangible improvements in outcomes for minoritized students? And why does scaling the same approach vary so much across institutions? In this engaging presentation and panel discussion we will explore the varied success of scaling our humanized online teaching model across 17 CCC and CSU partner institutions. You’ll hear firsthand from colleagues at our partner colleges as they share their individualized campus forecasts.

By the end of this session, you should be able to:
  1. Evaluate the impact of an intersegmental project designed to scale humanizing, an equitable online teaching approach, across seventeen CCCs and CSUs;
  2. Consider conditions that positively and negatively influence the scaling of equity-focused teaching innovations;
  3. Hear insights from drivers of educational technology in diverse institutional roles who spearheaded humanized online teaching on their campus

Adventures in RSI: Tracing the regular and substantive interaction in online courses
Thursday December 5, 2024 9:10am - 9:30am PST
Many schools are facing the increased scrutiny to ensure compliance with regular and substantive interaction in distance education courses. As a result, many colleges are seeking ways to communicate these requirements to instructors, and to assess their status of RSI compliance in DE courses. The "substantive" part of regular and substantive interaction requires that any evaluation of RSI be qualitative as well as quantitative.

In this session, I will discuss Mt. SAC's efforts to create a systematic program for tracking RSI in distance education courses including the components, technology, and review process of the program. Mt. SAC is working on this following a 2024 accreditation review. As an instructional designer, I have been a part of the workgroup and contributed ideas for how to make the process efficient for professors, reviewers, and administrators. I would like to share our efforts, what worked and what didn't in creating an institutional RSI review process.

At the end of this session, participants will:
  1. Hear about the requirements for regular substantive interaction and the ideas Mt. SAC generated to track them in online courses.
  2. Learn about how Mt. SAC created a team of RSI reviewers and their roles.
  3. Learn how Mt. SAC leveraged technology to track and evaluate RSI in DE courses.

A Practical Guide for Enhanced Classroom Experiences
Friday December 6, 2024 9:20am - 9:30am PST
The classroom is no longer bounded by the buildings that we grew up in. The library at our fingertips lets us take students on learning journeys in every conceivable domain. Furthermore, new AI tools are appearing that beg for collaborative exploration, debugging and the development of learning artifacts.

We have adapted to desktop tools and online meetings but bringing these to the new classroom has remained in the province of instructional technologists, expert influencers and online personalities. However, exciting new tools have emerged that make it possible and worthwhile for practicing educators to build their own lessons around the materials they have at their fingertips. They can demonstrate how they learn, not just what they need to teach.

In this session, we will demonstrate the development and presentation of a lesson that integrates AI interfaces, website explorations and a live Zoom session. We use the new CueCam Presenter suite of tools, which are freely available. We will discuss the implications for a future education paradigm the is not confined by walls or borders.

By the end of this session, you should be able to:
  1. Attendees will feel comfortable that they can indeed bring the latest and most relevant materials to their students
  2. Attendees will see how CueCam lashes together the Apple silicon-based products they already have to do what they want to do in class and online.
  3. Attendees will walk away with a fresh appreciation for how Zoom can move them beyond the four walls of their traditional classrooms.
