With a focus on support and adapting to the evolving educational landscape, organization structural changes may need to occur. The change process from idea to implementation should be done thoughtfully and precisely to accurately take into account the intended goals and the required steps to meet those goals. At one large university, two departments that supported the campus community with pedagogy and technology related topics began the process of merging into one. The development of a new cohesive unit required a focus on the intended outcomes of the change and the impact it could have on those both internal and external to the departments. In addition, it  needed to highlight and reflect the expertise of the staff members. This session will briefly discuss the process of merging academic support units, reasons that mergers might occur, and best practices to implement the changes that positively impact the evolving needs of the campus community.

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
  1. Participants will discover which change processes can lead to a successful merger of academic departments.
  2. Participants will examine how a transparent approach to organizational change can generate a stronger, cohesive, and cooperative department.
  3. Participants will identify how the naming of a department has an impact on the broader community.
