Resistance and conflict are not strangers to the faculty member-instructional designer relationship, particularly when roles are not clearly delineated. In his 2021 article, “The Collaborative Mapping Model: Relationship-Centered Instructional Design for Higher Education,” Jason Drysdale proposes a process to support faculty with their course design and development process and defines the role of the instructional designer as a collaborator, where the emphasis is on the relationship more than the product.
The instructional designers at California State University implemented this model with 40 faculty by offering a stipend to re-design face-to-face courses to online formats, including hybrid and fully asynchronous courses. The re-design process is currently taking place. An evaluation survey will be administered to faculty and instructional designers, and the results will be shared at this conference.
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Describe the Collaborative Mapping Model (CMM) process
- Compare and contrast the experience of CSUF instructional designers with their own campus and imagine what the CMM process could look like for their institution.
- Adopt and adapt the CMM forms developed at CSUF to meet their own needs.
