This workshop equips education professionals with practical tools and methodologies to lead ed tech projects efficiently. Participants will explore project management processes like Waterfall and Agile, learning to adapt them to technology initiatives in education. Through interactive exercises, attendees will develop a toolkit designed to manage common challenges, enhance stakeholder engagement, and ensure project success in today’s digital learning environments.

At the end of this session, attendees will be able to:

Understand PM Processes for EdTech – Introduce the five stages of project management and how they apply to educational technology projects.

San Diego State University adopted a new student feedback system in Fall 2022, as our campus came together to transition from our homegrown enterprise resource planning system to PeopleSoft–the solution adopted across the California State University system. Part of this transition included replacing our in-house student evaluation system with commercially available software (Explorance Blue).

Please join us as we share many of the lessons learned on our journey, from planning, configuring, and launching Explorance Blue to continually improving the deployment of student feedback surveys at San Diego State University. We will also share general practices for process improvement and our vision for the future of gathering and analyzing survey data to drive improvement.

Through grant funding provided via the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, eight system colleges are creating new direct assessment competency-based education (CBE) programs that will offer certificates and full AA degrees. This form of learning offers many benefits for both students and colleges, helping us all adapt to a changing economy and higher ed environment. But, creating a new CBE program is not a simple endeavor, especially “direct assessment” CBE at a public college. During this presentation, we will describe the potential benefits of CBE, how to address specific challenges in developing such a program, and how certain technologies can facilitate the process. Documents will be shared as resources to guide colleges in creating their own CBE programs. At the end of this session, participants will be able to: 1) Define what CBE is and describe how it can benefit students (and colleges)
2) Summarize the characteristics of the programs being developed in the CCC System
3) Explain how certain technologies can help a college develop and deliver CBE

In this presentation, we will demonstrate our new quality assurance dashboard. We will show search filters, what data it uses and different graphs available. Our quality assurance dashboard was developed by Institutional Effectiveness & Research department to visualize the impact that the Campus Quality Assurance initiative has had on student success. The purpose of the dashboard is to provide a high level graphical view of before and after changes in non-passing grades data, along with the ability to go into specifics such as First Gen, Under Represented Minorities (URM), and the annual academic years etc. It provides a visual that demonstrates that QM certified trainings and certified courses does have a positive impact on student learning.

In late 2020, UC San Diego's service desk received a ticket from a concerned professor indicating that a machine captioning system had incorrectly transcribed multiple instances of profanity or offensive words from a Zoom-based lecture. What began as a technical investigation quickly turned into a broader discussion of censorship, academic freedom, and the ultimate impracticality of educational institutions being able to meet basic accessibility standards for multimedia. In this talk we'll discuss this and other similar incidents at UC San Diego, offer ideas for how schools can realistically approach meeting WCAG AA accessibility standards, and invite participants to provide solutions of their own.

A Model for Instructional Designers Collaborating with Faculty: The Collaborative Mapping Model

Resistance and conflict are not strangers to the faculty member-instructional designer relationship, particularly when roles are not clearly delineated. In his 2021 article, “The Collaborative Mapping Model: Relationship-Centered Instructional Design for Higher Education,” Jason Drysdale proposes a process to support faculty with their course design and development process and defines the role of the instructional designer as a collaborator, where the emphasis is on the relationship more than the product.

The instructional designers at California State University implemented this model with 40 faculty by offering a stipend to re-design face-to-face courses to online formats, including hybrid and fully asynchronous courses. The re-design process is currently taking place. An evaluation survey will be administered to faculty and instructional designers, and the results will be shared at this conference.

Compare and contrast the experience of CSUF instructional designers with their own campus and imagine what the CMM process could look like for their institution.

With a focus on support and adapting to the evolving educational landscape, organization structural changes may need to occur. The change process from idea to implementation should be done thoughtfully and precisely to accurately take into account the intended goals and the required steps to meet those goals. At one large university, two departments that supported the campus community with pedagogy and technology related topics began the process of merging into one. The development of a new cohesive unit required a focus on the intended outcomes of the change and the impact it could have on those both internal and external to the departments. In addition, it needed to highlight and reflect the expertise of the staff members. This session will briefly discuss the process of merging academic support units, reasons that mergers might occur, and best practices to implement the changes that positively impact the evolving needs of the campus community.

California Education Learning Lab’s Grand Challenge: Overcoming the Calculus Barrier to STEM Success will connect four major funded projects to improve learning outcomes and close racial and gender equity gaps in STEM degree attainment in the three segments of California Higher Education.

The C3 Grand Challenge Cohort Facilitator Team has been working closely with will help the Grand Challenge awarded teams for the past three years. This work includes sharing their project ideas, approaches, findings, data, and outcomes over the duration of the award three-year period. Additionally, the Cohort Facilitator Team, has focused their work this year on and developing work to facilitate webinars on use of a Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) rubric for development of online materials, model curriculum frameworks, searchable database of course assets, Open Educational Resource (OER) development, and Creative Commons licensing for publicly funded projects.

The Cohort Facilitator Team leverages opportunities to Convene, Connect, and Collaborate among the awardees groups..
California Education Learning Lab’s Grand Challenge The educational assets will be located in: LibreTexts and MERLOT providing open access to educators and learners.
Year three efforts of the Cohort Facilitator Team have focused on the following actions to finalize the 3-year project with the 4 awardee teams.

In the summer of 2023, faculty generative AI training was rolled out at Cal State Monterey Bay. By the summer of 2024, the need for additional faculty development was evident. In this presentation, you will explore how we supported our faculty to actively apply what they learned, by integrating generative AI into their curriculum and into their instructional materials development process. Our goal with this session is to share our practices and support other institutions to learn from our wins, and even more importantly, from our mistakes!

After attending this session, participants will be able to:

Explore a framework for incentivizing continued faculty development around generative AI
Identify resources, challenges, and benefits of furthering generative AI faculty development
Strategize a method for furthering generative AI curriculum adoption by faculty

Bots are getting bolder and wiser as they are negatively impacting higher education institutions, in particular in our California Community Colleges, where they target and fill many courses taking away seats from real students and impacting not only our students' success and completion, yet also the success of our faculty, and have greater institutional financial implications. In this presentation we will review various impacts in higher ed. at institutional and course levels, impact on teaching and learning, how we at LBCC utilize data to understand BOT trends, and ways to combat their impact.

Using weather conditions as a metaphor, we will address the question, “What constitutes successful scaling of equitable teaching practices?” Is it the number of faculty who complete a professional development program, or the tangible improvements in outcomes for minoritized students? And why does scaling the same approach vary so much across institutions? In this engaging presentation and panel discussion we will explore the varied success of scaling our humanized online teaching model across 17 CCC and CSU partner institutions. You’ll hear firsthand from colleagues at our partner colleges as they share their individualized campus forecasts.

By the end of this session, you should be able to:

Evaluate the impact of an intersegmental project designed to scale humanizing, an equitable online teaching approach, across seventeen CCCs and CSUs;
